Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- Pinch of salt & black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon maple syrup, honey or brown sugar
- 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sherry (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic (or powder)
- 1/4 teaspoon granulated onion (or powder)
- 4 soft burger buns (brioche)
- 1/2 pound sliced Gruyère cheese or 1 cup shredded
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Roadmap:
- Caramelize onions, salt & pepper in olive oil over medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes until golden then stir in maple syrup.
- Note: If onions begin to burn at any point, stir in a dash or 2 of beef stock or water.
- Add ground beef, cook until browned.
- Stir in garlic, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, sherry (if using), thyme, granulated garlic & onion.
- Simmer for 5-7 minutes until flavors meld. Add a splash of beef stock or water if meat mixture is a bit dry.
- Toast hamburger buns until golden.
- Spoon beef mixture onto buns, top with Swiss cheese.
- Broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese melts (optional)
- Garnish with fresh parsley and serve straight away.
It’s so drippy & sloppy… I’m tempted to call it a “French Onion” soupy sammy.
