Stromboli Pinwheels

Stromboli pinwheels

If you’re a bit tired of the typical meat & cheese appetizer tray, give these Stromboli pinwheels a try. They hit all the same flavor notes, in a tastier pastry package.

Active Time: 10 min.

Total Time: 25 min.

Servings: 6 (as an appetizer)

1 sheet puff pastry, defrosted

2 slices deli ham of choice

2 – 4 slices pepperoni or salami of choice (enough for 1 thin, single layer)

2 slices deli provolone cheese

2 slices deli mozzarella (not fresh, too much moisture)

¼ cup roasted bell peppers (store bought or pan sautéd).

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Pinch of salt & pepper

(Optional) Jarred pizza sauce or marinara for dipping.  Warm & doctor up the flavor with the following:

1/4 teaspoon each: granulated onion, granulated garlic & oregano

Drizzle of honey or maple syrup – to taste

Pinch of crushed red chili flakes

Roadmap:

  1. On a lightly floured surface, roll out pastry to crease seams.
  2. Place provolone slices to cover pastry, leaving a 1/4 inch border on ends. Layer roasted peppers, sliced meats & finish with mozzarella, oregano, salt & pepper on top (think of cheeses as glue).
  3. Roll into a cylinder and place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Carefully slice rolled stromboli into 6 even slices. Lay each slice on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake pinwheels for 12 – 15 minutes or until golden brown before removing from oven to let cool.
  6. If doctoring sauce, warm all ingredients in saucepan while pinwheels bake & cool.
