Description

This “French onion” sloppy Joe is almost as easy & fun to prepare as it is to eat. Grab your stack of napkins!

Active Time: 10 min.

Total Time: 35 min.

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Pinch of salt & black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon maple syrup, honey or brown sugar
  • 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sherry (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon granulated garlic (or powder)
  • 1/4 teaspoon granulated onion (or powder)
  • 4 soft burger buns (brioche)
  • 1/2 pound sliced Gruyère cheese or 1 cup shredded
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Roadmap:

  1. Caramelize onions, salt & pepper in olive oil over medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes until golden then stir in maple syrup.
  2. Note: If onions begin to burn at any point, stir in a dash or 2 of beef stock or water.
  3. Add ground beef, cook until browned.
  4. Stir in garlic, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, sherry (if using), thyme, granulated garlic & onion.
  5. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until flavors meld. Add a splash of beef stock or water if meat mixture is a bit dry.
  6. Toast hamburger buns until golden.
  7. Spoon beef mixture onto buns, top with Swiss cheese.
  8. Broil for 1-2 minutes until cheese melts (optional)
  9. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve straight away.

It’s so drippy & sloppy…  I’m tempted to call it a “French Onion” soupy sammy.
